Using Layering Stamps to Create Backgrounds


This card features Altenew's Build-A-Flower: Hyacinth Stamp Set and the following Ink Bundles from Altenews: Rose Petal, Tranquility, Sugarplums, and Green Valley. Altenew's Ink Sets are each a color family that has 4 colors which makes choosing colors for layering stamps easy. These inks are dye inks on a felt pad and come in many colors. They are the first dye ink line I invested in and my go to for when I'm struggling to pick a color. The inks and card stock for each card is listed below.

To create the background for these cards, I cut out ovals using Altenew's Nesting Ovals Die Set and used the bottom layer of the flower from the stamp set in the two lightest colors in various locations on the paper. To ensure I was stamping in the same location each time, I placed the negative of the die cut in my MISTI and taped it down so I could put the paper oval in the same spot each time. 


I then cut out many die cuts of the flowers I intended to use. For these floral images, I found it easiest to die cut first and then stamp. The inks I used have a blending solution in them so they will smooth out as they dry so for the best results for layering stamps, it is better to let them dry completely before stamping he next layer. I don't like to use a heat tool to dry my paper because I'm lazy so instead I cut out multiple images to stamp and by the time I'm finished stamping the first layer on all of them, the first one I stamped is dry enough for the next layer. This allows me to make multiple cards at once. 


These cards feature Altenew's Build-A-Flower: Snapdragon Stamp Set and the Ink Bundles Enchanted Garden, Lapis Lazuli, Golden Sunset, and Cherry Blossom. I made the background the same way as the previous card set. For these flowers, I wanted the top and bottom of the image to be different colors, so I stamped the top of the flower with one set of inks and the bottom with another. The specific colors are listed below. To get a more blended look, I dabbed off some of the ink where the two colors would meet with a lint free cloth. I repeated this step for each layer.

To finish the cards, I made A2 card bases from the cardstock listed above. I ran the top half of the card through my die cutting machine with Altenew's Dotted Lines Debossing Folder which cuts little dots into the cardstock but does not actually cut anything out. I then glued the elements onto the card. For more dimension, I added two additional layers under the floral image. I added a sentiment from Altenew's Heartfelt Sentiment Stamp Set and the embellishments from Little Things from Lucy's Cards.

Iron-Off Embossed Resist on Dark Cardstock with Distress Oxide Sprays

  I'm starting to build up my Christmas card collection for this year and decided I wanted to use an iron-off emboss resist technique to create some quick card sets. To create these cards, I first stamped Colorado Craft Company's Big & Bold Warm Wishes Snowflake Clear Stamp with Veramark Ink onto various dark colored cardstock from Taylored Expressions.  I then used WOW Embossing Powder Clear Gloss which created a darker shiny image of the snowflake as shown above. I then put the card in a cardboard box so that I could use Distress Oxide Spray to add color to the cards. I placed some paper towels in the box to absorb the excess and placed the card down so that the top of the card was closest to me. Embossed Vellum Cardfront with Copic Coloring

  To create these cards, I first cut an A2 card front from Neenah Solar White Classic Crest 110# Cardstock and a sheet of vellum cut to 4.25" by 6" so that it was slightly taller than my A2 card front. I scored the vellum using a Scor-Pal at 5.5" and enforced the scoreline using a Teflon Bone Folder . I then stamped Simon Says Stamp's Hibiscus Blooms Stamp Set onto my white card front using Gina K Designs Obsidian Amalgam Ink using my MISTI .  Without moving the image in my MISTI, I stamped the sheet of vellum using Versamark Ink so that the stamp would align at the bottom of the vellum and heat embossed the image with Hero Arts Gold Embossing Powder . I also stamped and heat embossed a sentiment from Altenew's Bouquet of Love Stamp Set to the vellum. To heat emboss on vellum without warping, I used a heavy weight vellum and constantly moved my heat tool while embossing so that it wasn't on one area for more then about a second. Northern Lights Background Holiday Card Sets

I created these holiday card sets using the  Hero Arts My Monthly Hero Classic August 2023 Card Kit . Hero Arts card kits are released the first Saturday of every month and they have several  subscription options or can be purchased individually. However, once a kit is sold out, they are no longer available. This card kit was nature themed and comes with dies to create trees lines, mountains, and canyons as well as embossing powders and cardstock, but I decided to use some of the dies for holiday cards instead.  For each card, I first stamped the northern lights using a stamp from  Hero Arts Northern Lights Polar Bears Stamp Set onto Neenah Solar White 110# Cardstock with VersaMark Ink and embossed the image with  WOW Opaque Bright White Superfine Embossing Powder .
